Successfully Implementing NetSuite: A Consultant’s Perspective

Michaela Casey Senior NetSuite Functional Consultant

From the desk of Michaela, a member of the SquareWorks Consulting team, comes practical advice and proven strategies to make your NetSuite implementation smoother and more successful.

I’m Michaela, a NetSuite consultant with nearly four years of experience specializing in ERP implementation and optimization. I hold a Master’s degree focused in business processes and management from Boston University, where I developed a strong foundation in both technical systems and business strategy. I’m passionate about helping organizations streamline their processes, improve efficiency, and leverage data to drive better decision-making. I thrive on delivering tailored NetSuite solutions that meet each client’s unique needs and support their long-term success.

As a consultant specializing in ERP solutions, I’ve had the privilege of working on many NetSuite implementation projects. Each project has its own unique challenges, but through experience, I’ve identified key strategies that can make the process smoother and more successful. Here’s my take on effectively implementing NetSuite, based on my experiences.

Understanding the Business Needs

First and foremost, it’s essential to understand the business you are working with. Every organization has its own set of goals, processes, and pain points. I usually kick off the project with thorough discussions and workshops to capture the needs of stakeholders. This helps in tailoring NetSuite’s capabilities to fit the specific requirements of the business, rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all solution.

Planning and Roadmapping

Once we’ve identified the business needs, the next step is creating a clear implementation plan. This includes setting realistic timelines, defining project milestones, and assigning responsibilities. I often emphasize the importance of having a roadmap that not only outlines technical aspects but also considers change management and user training. An effective roadmap acts as a guiding star throughout the implementation process.

Engaging the Right Team

A successful NetSuite implementation relies on collaboration between various teams. I always encourage businesses to assemble a cross-functional team that includes IT, finance, operations, and end-users. This diverse group can provide valuable insights and help in addressing potential issues early on. Plus, having stakeholders involved from the beginning fosters a sense of ownership and increases the likelihood of user adoption.

Customization vs. Configuration

NetSuite offers a range of customization options, but I’ve learned that less is often more. Over-customization can lead to increased complexity and higher maintenance costs down the road. I advocate for leveraging NetSuite’s out-of-the-box features wherever possible and only customizing when absolutely necessary. This approach keeps the implementation streamlined and manageable.

Data Migration

One of the trickiest parts of any implementation is data migration. Transitioning data from legacy systems to NetSuite requires careful planning and execution. I recommend starting with a data audit to ensure accuracy and completeness. Developing a clear strategy for data mapping, cleansing, and validation is crucial. By testing data migration in stages, we can address any discrepancies before the final cutover.

Training and Support

Once the system is set up and data is migrated, the next critical step is user training. I’ve seen firsthand how inadequate training can lead to frustration and underutilization of the system. I advocate for comprehensive training sessions tailored to different user roles. Ongoing support post-implementation is equally important; having a support team ready to address questions can make a huge difference in user confidence and satisfaction. Need ongoing NetSuite support? Continuous Improvement

Finally, the implementation doesn’t end when the system goes live. It’s important to foster a culture of continuous improvement. Regularly gathering feedback from users can help identify areas for enhancement. NetSuite also offers numerous updates and new features, so staying informed about these can help organizations maximize their investment over time.
